THE 99% WORD FIX. It's one of those
simple tips we often forget and
continue to tolerate MS Word (any version)
crashing, sending error
messages, and misbehaving in general.
Just close Word and do a find
(Ctrl+F will do nicely) for the file
"normal.dot" and delete it. If you
think that's too drastic, rename it to something
else. Restart Word and it
rebuilds the file and resets its default to
the original settings. It's
clean and it even seems to start more quickly,
with no errors. Neat.

that if you're having problem
with slow boot ups and low resources, you
might want to disable some of the
programs that start automatically when you

Those programs can be seen with the common
Ctrl+Shift+Del keyboard
combination, and you can keep them from starting
up by going to Start|Run
and entering "msconfig" in the box, then clicking
on the StartUp tab and
unchecking those applications you don't need
on start up. The problem is in
identifying which of those are not essential,
and the chart provides a
comprehensive explanation of these.
I particularly like Answers That Work

WINDOWS KEY USEFULNESS. For many of
us, the Windows key (with the logo)
on most keyboards is little used. But
it will add some shortcut versatility

WINDOWS KEY REVISITED. Perhaps the most
neglected key on the computer
keyboard is the one with the Windows logo,
but it packs a lot of
usefulness. Used alone, it opens the
Start menu. With R, it launches the
Run dialog box, with D it minimizes all open
windows or the combination
used a second time restores the open applications.
With E, the Windows key
opens Windows Explorer, with F it searches
for a file or folder, and with
Tab it changes the focus to other programs
open on the task bar. The
Windows key with the Break key opens the System
Properties dialog box. If
you're using Windows XP the Windows key and
U combination opens the Utility
Manager or, with L, the Windows key locks
the workstation for privacy. And
lest you forget these or need more information
regarding keyboard
shortcuts, use the Windows key once more,
this time with F1, and enter
"keyboard shortcuts".

Before that Windows key (the one with the Windows

lack of use, look at all the
handy things it will do for you: By itself,
it displays the Start

Wondows Explorer, with Tab it cycles through
active applications on your
taskbar, and with F it displays the find function
for all files. Use it
with F1 to display Help, with R to display the
Run command, and with
Pause/Break for the System Properties dialog
window. With Shift + M, the
Windows key will undo minimizing all Windows,
and with Ctrl + F it will
display the find: computer dialog window. All
these work on at least
Windows 98 and XP operating system and you can
experiment on the others as
you please.

and the < and > keys to decrease or increase
font size in MS Word. Bob
Keller wrote to suggest dragging the "large A"
(grow font 1 point) and
"small A" (shrink font 1 point) to Word's tool
bar. You'll find these in
Word at Tools|Customize|Commands. Select
"Format" from the left menu and
scroll the right menu until you find the two
icons. Then a simple drag and
drop will place the icons within convenient reach
when needed to change
font size. Thanks for a great tip, Bob!

USING THE WINDOWS KEY (From NNTricks)
Perhaps the most neglected key on the computer
keyboard is the one with the Windows logo, but it packs a lot of
usefulness. Used alone, it opens the Start menu. With R,
it launches the
Run dialog box, with D it minimizes all open windows or the combination
used a second time restores the open applications. With E, the Windows
key
opens Windows Explorer, with F it searches for a file or folder, and
with
Tab it changes the focus to other programs open on the task bar.
The
Windows key with the Break key opens the System Properties dialog box.
If
you're using Windows XP the Windows key and U combination opens the
Utility
Manager or, with L, the Windows key locks the workstation for privacy.
And
lest you forget these or need more information regarding keyboard
shortcuts, use the Windows key once more, this time with F1, and enter
"keyboard shortcuts".
CHANGING FONT SIZE IN WORD (by NNTricks)
Of course you can change the font size in
Microsoft Word by moving the cursor up to the displayed font size and
clicking the down arrow, then selecting the desired size. But
that's
slower than the keyboard equivalent. Holding down the Shift and
Ctrl key,
use < or > to decrease or increase the size.
